Ways of mediating grammar encounters in the classroom

Welcome to Module 2! This Module focuses on grammar presentation and practice. You'll be exploring what teachers can do to make the students' encounters with new grammar items memorable and conductive to learning. You will also become familiar with a range of grammar practice activities and learn what factors you should take into account when selecting and /or designing grammar practice tasks.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • identify learning challenges of a grammar structure in terms of Form, Meaning and Use;
  • explain the structure an effective grammar presentation;
  • examine the role of different grammar practice activities;
  • outline a communicative grammar lesson.

Below are the tasks you need to complete in Module 2 with the recommended time as a guide. These time guidelines are only approximate: you may find that you spend longer or shorter on some tasks, depending on your experience with and interest in the topic.

Getting started

Task 1: The Teacher’s Dilemma. Watch the video of a teacher sharing her dilemmas about grammar presentation, grammar practice and communicative grammar teaching. Then watch one of the MOOC designers describing what you will learn in Module 2. (10 minutes)

Task 2: Complete a brief survey on your teaching practice. (10 minutes)

What makes a memorable (and communicative) grammar encounter?

Task 3: What can teachers do to make grammar encounters memorable? Study some grammar presentation examples. (40 minutes)

Task 4: Take Canvas Quiz 1 to check your understanding of core concepts related to grammar presentation. (20 minutes)

Task 5: Read the Canvas page "The Role of Grammar Practice". (40 minutes)

Task 6: Take Canvas Quiz 2 to check your understanding of core concepts related to grammar practice. (20 minutes)

Task 7: Prepare and implement a lesson plan. (60 minutes for planning + 3 hours for implementation)

Task 8: OPTIONAL: Respond to the discussion questions in the discussion forum. (30 minutes)

Review

Task 9: Take Canvas Quiz 3 to check your understanding of core concepts related to grammar presentation and practice. (20 minutes)

Task 10: OPTIONAL: Reflect on Module 2. (20 minutes)

Task 11: Watch Module 2 Summary. (10 minutes)

Task 12: OPTIONAL: Want to learn more? Explore additional teaching resources: read an article and reflect on it in your journal. (30 minutes)
