1. The teacher elicits different extra-curricular activities students can do at school or at university.

2. Students make a list of any other extra-curricular activities that are typical in schools or universities in their country.

3. Students listen to four people talking about extra-curricular activities and decide which activities they talk about.

4. Students listen to the recording again and fill in the gaps.

5. The teacher asks questions about the recording.

6. Students discuss advantages and disadvantages of different extra-curricular activities.

7. Students choose an extra-curricular activity they know something about and prepare a presentation on this activity.

Question 1
/ 2 pts
You are teaching a group of high-school students (17-18) who have problems with the First and Second Conditional sentences. They want you to help them do well at the next English test. Review the lesson plan and select ALL grammar practice tasks that you think would help students prepare for the test. IMPORTANT: there may be multiple correct answers.

Correct!  This activity is linked with the topic (extra-curricular activities) and will help students practice the target structures.

Correct! The activity is guided, but leaves space for students to use their own ideas.

Question 2
/ 2 pts
You are teaching a group of university students who want to improve their presentation skills. They have problems with fluency. Review the lesson plan and decide which of the following activities will help them to improve their fluency. IMPORTANT: there may be multiple correct answers.

Correct! Students use the language to express their points of view; this activity can help them improve their fluency.

Correct! This activity encourages free production of the language. Students will have a chance to improve their fluency.

Question 3
/ 2 pts
Your colleague is teaching a group of university students who know all about modal verbs but have problems with using them in communication. Your colleague wants to help the students use modal verbs accurately and fluently, so she has decided to revise the use of modal verbs after Step 4. She is not sure how to continue the lesson. Select the activities that will help the students practice how to use modal verbs in context.

Yes, these activities may help students. Student will first take part in a discussion led and supported by the teacher. Using this discussion as a model, they will discuss advantages and disadvantages of different extra-curricular activities on their own and share their findings with the entire class. The teacher will have a chance to establish whether they can use modal verbs in context or not, and give them feedback at the end of the activity.

Yes, these activities may help students. While doing dictogloss, they will have to reconstruct the text they have heard, then compare their text with the original, notice mistakes and focus on the correct use of modal verbs. In the following activity, poster preparation, they will have to use modal verbs to describe a different extra-curricular activity. Finally, they will have time to read what other students have prepared and get involved in self and peer correction.

Lesson Plan

Use this lesson plan to answer the following two questions.

Vacation

1. The teacher writes 'Vacation' on the board. The students brainstorm all the things they typically do during vacation.

2. The teacher hands out a story about Peter’s vacation, together with pictures of it. The students read the story quickly and put the pictures in order. The teacher gives the correct order.

3. The students reread the text and look up any unknown vocabulary in their dictionaries. The teacher checks any problematic words.

4. The teacher gives the students the same story but with gaps instead of verbs. The learners fill the gaps from memory. They check their answers.

5. The students have five minutes to make notes for their own story about the best vacation they have ever had.

6. In groups, the students tell their own stories to each other and then decide on the most exciting vacation.

PartialQuestion 4
/ 2 pts
You are teaching a group of teenagers (14-15). The class is mixed ability, most students are high beginners (A2), some are at a pre-intermediate level (B1). Most students know the rules of the Past Simple Tense; however, they frequently make mistakes when using irregular verbs. Review the lesson plan and select ALL of the grammar practice tasks that you think would help students use irregular verbs accurately while communicating. IMPORTANT: there may be multiple correct answers.

Correct! Jazz chants can help students learn and reinforce grammar patterns.

Not really. In this activity, students are asked to recognize irregular verbs, this will not help them learn them.

Correct! Bingo will provide non-threatening opportunities for students to practice and learn irregular verbs.

PartialQuestion 5
/ 2 pts
You are teaching a group of teenagers (14-15). The class is mixed ability, most students are high beginners (A2), some are at a pre-intermediate level (B1). Most students know the rules of the Past Simple Tense; however, they make mistakes when they ask questions using the Past Simple (for example, they say When you went there?) Review the lesson plan and select ALL of the grammar practice tasks that you think would help students form accurate questions while communicating. IMPORTANT: there may be multiple correct answers.

Correct! Putting words in the right order, or 'unscrambling' sentences, is a good activity for helping students focus on the word order.

Correct! Students have to prepare their own questions and use them to interview their group members. This is a good grammar practice activity - students ask questions they want to ask and interview several group members.

Not really. This activity may help students revise how the interrogative form of the Past Simple Tense is formed (e.g. "He went to the theater", "Did he go to the theater?"), but it will not help them overcome their learning problem.
