Task-Based Grammar Teaching

In Module 4, you will become familiar with the basics of task-based language teaching, analyze several grammar lessons following this approach, and plan how to apply task-based grammar teaching in your context.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the rationale behind the task-based instruction format;
  • explain the staging of a task-based grammar lesson;
  • outline a task-based grammar lesson.

Below are the tasks you need to complete in Module 4 with the recommended time as a guide. These time guidelines are only approximate: you may find that you spend longer or shorter on some tasks, depending on your experience with and interest in the topic.

Getting started

Task 1: The Teacher’s Dilemma. Watch the video of two experienced teacher educators describing some challenges that teachers encounter when implementing task-based grammar teaching for the first time. (10 minutes)

Task 2: Complete a brief survey on your teaching practice. (10 minutes)

Task-based grammar teaching

Task 3: Read the Canvas page “The Basics of Task-based Teaching”. (30 minutes)

Task 4: Take Canvas Quiz 1 to check your understanding of core concepts related to task-based grammar teaching. (20 minutes)

Task 5: Read the Canvas page "Task Types in TBLT: Whats and Hows". (20 minutes)

Task 6: Prepare and implement a task-based lesson plan. (60 minutes for planning + 3 hours for implementation)

Task 7: OPTIONAL: Respond to discussion questions in the discussion forum. (30 minutes)

Review

Task 8: Take Canvas Quiz 2 to check your understanding of task-based grammar teaching. (20 minutes)

Task 9: Reflect on Module 4. (20 minutes)

Task 10: Watch Module 4 Summary. (20 minutes)

Task 11: OPTIONAL: Want to learn more? Explore additional resources and comment on them in your journal. (20 minutes)

    Selecting an appropriate task for a particular group of students is the first and perhaps most important step in ensuring the success of a TBLT lesson. The knowledge of students’ current or future language needs can help teachers choose relevant tasks that will generate rich interaction and create contexts that facilitate language learning.
